Food, Football, and Fun

Gavin found a cool cookbook at the library and he wanted to plan a special menu with it. I declared last Sunday a stay home and cooking day.
On the menu was a football cheeseball, triple berry punch, pretzel bites, southwest quinoa bowls, and chocolate fruit pizzas.  The pretzel bites didn't turn out as well as we'd hoped, but everything else was a hit!

The kids really are great helpers in the kitchen.  I am able to give them jobs and they will go with it.  Every now and then it got a little hectic, but I know it won't be long and they will be self sufficient in the kitchen.

I got out my football tablecloth that used to belong to my Grandma Wolf.  I also used some of my football dishes to make it extra special.

Lots of memories were made that day.  It was definitely a day full of good FOOD, Colt's FOOTBALL, and family FUN!

Homeschool Highlights

Building Mazes: During Gavin's appointment, the kids worked on building a maze for their marbles to go through.
Nonsense Words: As a way to work on sounding out words, Gavin and I played a game making nonsense words. I gave him two cubes with consonants and one with vowels on it.  I had him roll all three and read the word.  Sometimes, he would make a real word, but often it is a silly word.

Water Painting: The kids got a water painting book from Uncle John's mom a few weeks back.  Today, while I was reading our current chapter book, the kids had fun painting.

A Nice Surprise: The current book we are reading is from Riley Hospital.  It is called Race to the Wild.  As I was reading, I stumbled across this post it note.  It was a nice surprise!
Cooking Class ~ Cinnamon Sugar and Orange Juice: Today in Cooking Class we made cinnamon sugar and fresh squeezed orange juice.  Since it was close to lunch time, we made cinnamon sugar toast and added yogurt and apple slices.  Yummy!

What are some highlights of your homeschool this week?

Cooking Class

Getting Organized: I bought this Cooking Class book last January and have been wanting to do it with the kids for a while.  I started it last school year but didn't really go full force due to it being so chaotic.  A few weeks ago, we went to the Dollar Tree and Big Lots and bought everything the kids needed for their cooking kits.  I decided to get each kid their own supplies since cooking is big in our house and it is something they will use for years to come.

First Recipe ~ Breakfast Sundaes: I kept calling these parfaits and then the kids kept calling them souffles, but no matter what you called them, they were delicious!
Practicing knife safety and cutting skills!

Granola Bars ~ Making:

Bacon ~ Three Ways: We learned how to make bacon three ways: in the oven, in a skillet, and in the microwave.  We tried each way and decided how we liked it best.  Macie said, "This is kind of like a science experiment, too!" It was and we learned we like it in the skillet best and that 5 minutes in the microwave is way too long!!

 Warning: Upside down pic below!
Granola Bars ~ Finished product: We cut these into bars and WOW were they yummy.  Super simple and a must make again!

First Day of School 2016-2017 School Year!

I did a few assessments on Friday, July 29th, but our first official day of the school year was Monday. The girls woke up so excited for the first day of school and wanted to start right away.  Unfortunately, we had to wait until Gavin was home from his weekly blood labs.  We were finally able to get started and we had a great first day.  I am so excited and ready to begin a new school year and can hardly believe that this is our second year of homeschooling!!

How long will those desks stay clean??
Working hard!: Gavin kept thinking that he had Macie's books, but he forgot that he is a First Grader now!

 Where's Waldo?
Sight Words Bag: This year, I am giving Gavin a bag of about 20 sight words at a time to practice reading.  His reading is coming at a slower pace, so I thought I would add this to build up his confidence.  Every day he practices the words and reads them to me. Since they are magnetic, we make it more fun by putting them on the white board or on a cookie sheet.
