Good Bye, Jungle! Hello, Fence!

Ever since we bought the house, we’ve wanted to replace the fence and clean out the “jungle” in our back yard.  We tried ourselves several times, but were never able to do it and thought about paying someone, but the money wasn’t available.  Over 8 years later, we are finally in a place where we could do it, so we bit the bullet.  We called Supercutz and they did an amazing job.  They came on Wednesday and when I came home I about died!  Our yard was double the size.  They finished up the work on Thursday and our yard looked HUGE!  Thursday, we were surprised to get a call from Backyard Fences and Decks to tell us they had an opening and could do our fence the next day.  We were anticipating waiting 2-4 weeks!  We came home Friday and it was all done.  3 days….all done!  Something we had wanted for 8 years…holy cow!  It’s taken some getting used to, but we LOVE it!!!

Chickens

On Monday, August 11th, we added 6 baby chicks to our family!  Brian has wanted chickens for years and I’ve been saying “not now, maybe someday”.  Well…that someday has come!  We’ve been doing a lot of yard work (pictures up next) and Brian had done tons of research.  We bought 6 ISA brown hens from Rural King.  Right now they are in a brooder (tote) in our half bath.  It is amazing to see how much they’ve grown in less than 2 weeks!  We will keep them inside for a few more weeks before putting them in their coop outside.  Brian was supposed to build the coop this weekend, but due to weather and illness, that didn’t happen.

The kids LOVE the chickens and Lilah is obsessed with them.  She is the only one who will actually hold them on her own.  The first night she kept saying, “Don’t worry, we won’t kill you.  Until you are oooold!”  It was the cutest thing.  I have to admit I’m already pretty attached to them.  We did explain to the kids upfront that anything can happen and that we will only keep them for about 2 years before getting new ones.  We decided as a family not to name them, but to put colored bands on them when they get bigger so we can tell them apart.  They are supposed to lay 6-7 eggs each week, so we shall see!
