Chickens

On Monday, August 11th, we added 6 baby chicks to our family!  Brian has wanted chickens for years and I’ve been saying “not now, maybe someday”.  Well…that someday has come!  We’ve been doing a lot of yard work (pictures up next) and Brian had done tons of research.  We bought 6 ISA brown hens from Rural King.  Right now they are in a brooder (tote) in our half bath.  It is amazing to see how much they’ve grown in less than 2 weeks!  We will keep them inside for a few more weeks before putting them in their coop outside.  Brian was supposed to build the coop this weekend, but due to weather and illness, that didn’t happen.

The kids LOVE the chickens and Lilah is obsessed with them.  She is the only one who will actually hold them on her own.  The first night she kept saying, “Don’t worry, we won’t kill you.  Until you are oooold!”  It was the cutest thing.  I have to admit I’m already pretty attached to them.  We did explain to the kids upfront that anything can happen and that we will only keep them for about 2 years before getting new ones.  We decided as a family not to name them, but to put colored bands on them when they get bigger so we can tell them apart.  They are supposed to lay 6-7 eggs each week, so we shall see!
