Riley Trip

Monday, Brian and I took Gavin back to Riley for his appointment with Dr. Haggstrom.  It was his next scheduled appointment and the first time we’d had a chance to talk to her since the ultrasound back in August.  On the way there, we stopped in Terre Haute.  We took Gavin to Teppanyaki because that is his favorite place to go right now.  We let him come up and pick out what he wanted because he was the only kiddo with us.  He loved being spoiled the whole day.  After eating, we went to the mall to let Gavin play.  We also ended up buying Gavin a pair of shoes for the weddings.  Then, we were on our way to Indy.

We arrived early and they called us back pretty much right away.  We did have to wait for a while in the room, but Gavin stayed occupied looking in a “seek and find” book.  When Dr. H came in, she went over the results of the ultrasound.  She basically said that there were no extra arteries, which is a good thing.  The only thing is, we still don’t know what is causing the warm feeling or the white spots.  As far as that, we will just wait and see.  We talked to her about the leg lengths and she seemed to think it was leveling out a bit.  We follow up with Dr. Loder in June.  She once again clarified that our potty training woes had nothing to do with the birth marks.  (Good to know, but still frustrating)  We mentioned that he has started complaining of pain.  She said that very soon, she will prescribe a compression sock to help with pain and blood clots.  She is trying to hold off as long as possible because he won’t like it and he will have it for an indefinite amount of time.  She advised us to start with an ace bandage.  We have to wrap his leg from his upper thigh to his mid calf.  We don’t have to do it every day yet, but will get him used to having something on his leg.  We also have to start documenting how often he complains.  We will do this until we go back in July.

Our final question had to do with physical activities and sports.  We realize he is only three, but as we start to sign him up for things or as he becomes interested, we want to know what’s safe.  She did say that for the most part, he can function as a typical child his age.  She has no intentions of restricting his gym time when in school.  However, she said that we need to keep him away from sports that may have direct hits to his leg.  The one she mentioned right away was football, but we also know wrestling and hockey.  We do know that he could get hit in the leg at any time, but we need to not put him in direct danger of it.  Brian’s face dropped and his heart sank.  Football is his true love.  Just on the way to the appointment, Gavin was talking about playing football at Lucas Oil.  We are by no means thinking that he would be an NFL player, it just breaks our hearts that we may have to tell our son he can’t do something or play something because of his birthmark.

The way home was pretty uneventful.  We made a few quick stops for gas and potty, but other than that drove home.  We ate dinner in the car.  We were happy to see the girls.  Thanks Grandpa and Grandma for picking them up and taking care of them for us!

Gavin really wanted to eat this chicken on a stick.  He loved it and I jokingly told Brian that next year he will be eating a turkey leg at the fall festival!
