Last weekend, we planned to take on the 3 day Potty Training method with Gavin. Basically, you go from diapers to underwear. No Pull Ups or diapers even at nap or nighttime. Brian and I both read the eBook, talked to Gavin about it, and were set to start first thing Saturday morning.
Well…Gavin had other plans. Friday night, we were watching a kids' show about going potty and he insisted he had to go potty right then. I put him on the potty, and sure enough, he went! I was shocked and thrilled! He insisted on putting on his big boy underwear. I was a little skeptical, but knew it would do more damage to put him back in a diaper then to change his sheets if need be. We called Daddy and made lots of phone calls! Not much after that, he peed in the potty again. I was beyond shocked and had great hope that this was going to work this time!
Getting Gavin to bed was a nightmare though. He kept saying he had to pee and we kept letting him try because we didn’t want him to have an accident. After a dozen tries, Brian and I were over it and told him to go to bed. A few minutes later, he came out crying because he had an accident. It was a slight tinkle in his undies, but we felt horrible about it! He finally went to sleep and was dry all night. We woke him up twice to pee and he went both times.
The next morning, we started off not so great. He had 2 accidents back to back. We pumped him full of liquids and said a million times “Tell Mommy and Daddy when you need to go potty”. One of us was with Gavin at all times watching his every move. This was a bit challenging because he isn’t our only child, but we made the commitment to do it. We only ate simple meals from the freezer and did minimal housework. (to be honest, this was hard for me) We spent a lot of time playing with the kids and they loved it! Then, Gavin got back in the groove and started peeing in the potty again. We made more phone calls and I texted people updates. The highlight was his first poop in the potty right before his nap. The look on his face was priceless! Besides one afternoon accident, he did great. He was dry again all night and this time woke up himself. He said he had a stuffy nose, but as soon as I put him on the potty, he peed.
Sunday started just like Saturday with back to back accidents. He went first thing in the morning and then had a tough time getting into the groove. After that, he did great! He hasn’t had an accident since! He is pooping and peeing in the potty all of the time now. I stayed home with him today and it was the final day of “potty training”. Tonight, we let him wear pants (part of the potty training is a t-shirt and undies only) and he was thrilled! He said, “Daddy, I’m potty trained now!
I honestly can’t believe it. He really is potty trained. The next few days will be tests for sure. Tomorrow, I am home with all three by myself and on Wednesday, he will go to Miss Julie’s for the first time. I will definitely be using this method with Lilah. The lady who wrote the book says the ideal age is 22 months. It won’t be long and we will be diaper free!!
I guess the third time's a charm!
